The South African Mint is responsible for minting all coins of the South African Rand on behalf of its owner, the South African Reserve Bank. Located in Centurion, near South Africa’s capital, Pretoria, this mint produces coins for both domestic and international markets. History of the South African Mint

After the discovery of gold in the South African Republic—which triggered the Witwatersrand Gold Rush in 1886—President Paul Kruger decided to establish a national mint. This was founded in 1890 and opened on July 6, 1892, in Pretoria. Following the end of the Second Boer War in 1902, the country was incorporated into the British Empire and became the Transvaal Colony. This led to the closure of the mint, as the pound sterling became the legal tender of the new colony.
 
Under the Mint Act of 1919, the British established a branch of the Royal Mint on January 1, 1923, which produced 83,114,575 pounds of sovereignty during its existence. As South Africa began to sever ties with Great Britain, the mint closed on June 30, 1941, and was later reopened as the South African Mint.
