How to clean my silver coins?

Autor: Daan Wesdorp Date: 2 June 2020 Update: 2 June 2020 Reading time: 4 min

Just like other silver products, silver coins need to be cleaned periodically as they can become dull over time if not maintained. While you may be tempted to use silver polish, this is not the correct method for cleaning silver coins as it can affect their natural color and shine. In this article, we explain how to clean silver coins without compromising their natural appearance.

Watch out

Proof coins should never be removed from their capsules without gloves, nor should they be cleaned, as this can damage the coin. It's best to store proof coins in their capsules and handle them as little as possible.

Brushing the coin

For non-proof silver coins, the first step is to remove the worst dirt with a brush. Use a brush with soft but stiff bristles, such as a toothbrush. During this process, you can also use boiled (distilled) water to clean the coin more effectively.

Cleaning with ammonia

For this step, it's crucial to use a mask, gloves, and safety goggles, and ensure good ventilation. Once you've taken these precautions, place your silver coins in a container of water and add a few drops of ammonia. Ammonia helps remove grease and dirt from the coin. Use only a few drops, as too much ammonia can damage silver coins. After soaking the coins in ammonia water for about 30 minutes, rinse them thoroughly and dry them. Instructions for rinsing are provided below.

Rinse

Thoroughly rinse the coins to remove any remaining ammonia, which could otherwise tarnish the silver. Place your coins in a container of distilled water, turning them regularly, and change the water once during the process. This rinsing process should take about 30 minutes.

Drying

Since moist coins can oxidize quickly, it's important to dry them carefully. Begin by drying your coins with a soft cloth, then use a hair dryer to ensure complete drying. Although this process takes some time, it's crucial to proceed with care to avoid damaging the coins. If you have any doubts about cleaning your coins, we're always available to provide advice. Never use silver or copper polish on silver coins. Avoid over-polishing as it can create an unnatural shine. Instead of a cloth, a trimmed toothbrush or nail brush is better suited for the cleaning work.

Lastly, the presence of spots or minor imperfections on your coins does not affect their buyback guarantee.
