Royal Canadian Mint
The Royal Canadian Mint is the official mint of Canada. This mint produces all the coins for circulation in Canada, but its activities do not stop there. It also produces silver coins, gold coins, and platinum coins for investors and collectors. In addition, the Royal Canadian Mint supplies coins to other countries. The mint is particularly known for its Gold Maple Leaf coins and Silver Maple Leaf coins. Additionally, the Royal Canadian Mint offers collectible coins, often struck in silver, with the Wildlife series being particularly popular.
History of the Royal Canadian Mint
The mint is 100% owned by the Canadian government. The Royal Canadian Mint was founded in 1908 and is located in Ontario. It has been producing all coins in Canada for a long time and is also involved in the production of other coins. From its headquarters in Ontario, the coins are designed and produced. In 1908, the first coin was struck there, and since 1912 the mint has had its own refinery to melt gold and silver. In 1912, the mint was commissioned by the Canadian Ministry of Finance to strike 8,000 pieces of $5 gold coins and 8,000 pieces of $10 gold coins. These were the first true Canadian gold coins produced entirely in Canada.
In 1979, the Royal Canadian Mint began producing 1 troy ounce gold bullion coins, the Maple Leaf coins, with a nominal value of 50 Canadian dollars. These coins were initially struck in 99.9% pure gold, but this would not be the limit; from 1982, the mint was the first in the world to strike gold coins with a fineness of 99.99% pure gold. In 1988, the 99.99% silver variant, the Silver Maple Leaf, was introduced, along with a platinum version. The first Palladium Maple Leaf was struck in 2005.

Maple Leaf coins with security features
Today, Maple Leaf coins are equipped with a unique hallmark that the Royal Canadian Mint applies using special laser technology. On the front of the coins, a small icon in the shape of a Maple Leaf (a maple leaf) has been added, with the year of issue engraved inside. This hallmark serves as a guarantee that it is a genuine Maple Leaf coin issued by the Royal Canadian Mint. Other parties that might attempt to replicate such coins do not have access to the same type of laser technology and, therefore, cannot reproduce the hallmark.
