Perth Mint launches the 2020 lunar, kookaburra and koala coins

Autor: Rolf van Zanten Date: 4 December 2024 Update: 4 December 2024 Reading time: 5 min

Today, Australia's Perth Mint has revealed the designs for the latest coins in the well-known Lunar, Kookaburra, and Koala series. The 2020 Gold Kangaroo also features a new design. The 2020 coins mark two significant milestones. First, it is the 1st release of the Lunar III series. This series consists of twelve designs based on the Chinese zodiac, with each year featuring a different animal. The Lunar II series concluded in 2019 with the Year of the Pig. Now, the series starts again with a new, modern design for the Lunar III series, beginning with 2020 as the Year of the Mouse. Another milestone is with the Kookaburra coins, which celebrate their 30th anniversary, reflected in the new designs for the Perth Mint’s 2020 coins.

Lunar Coins 2020

For the first time in 2020, the Perth Mint will also make a platinum version of the Lunar coins available! Just like in 1995, when the Perth Mint struck the first Lunar coin, the series begins with the Year of the Mouse.

The Lunar series will be available from the Perth Mint on September 9th. At The Silver Mountain, you will also be able to buy these coins, and there will be an expected delivery time of 4 to 5 weeks. After that, these coins will be typically available from stock.

The Lunar 2020 gold coins are minted in 10 troy ounces, 2 troy ounces, 1 troy ounce, as well as 1/2, 1/4, 1/10, and 1/20 ounces. All coins are struck in pure gold (99.99). The mintage of the 1 troy ounce version is limited to 30,000 pieces, while the other variants will be produced to meet market demand.

For the silver Lunar 2020 coins of the Year of the Mouse, coins will be minted in 10 kilograms, 1 kilogram, 5, 2, 1, and 1/2 ounces of pure silver, as usual. In Europe, the 1-kilogram coins are the most popular among investors, and the 1 troy ounce coins are mainly purchased by collectors. All variants are delivered in beautiful protective capsules. Most of the silver Lunar 2020 coins have an unlimited mintage, but no more than 300,000 pieces of the 1 troy ounce coins will be minted.

Kookaburra Coins 2020

The anniversary is central to the Kookaburra coins. The coin has been issued for 30 years, first released in 1990. On the front side of the coin, you can see the text "30th Anniversary" at the bottom, and the years 1990 and 2020 are mentioned on the back. Another unique aspect of this coin is that Queen Elizabeth II plays a less prominent role on the back, appearing only in a reduced form, with the image used for the 1990 Kookaburra coin displayed below. Also displayed on this side is the nominal value of 1 dollar (Australian dollars).

On the front side of the 2020 Kookaburra coin, a Kookaburra is shown in the foreground with a rising sun in the background.

These coins are minted in 1 troy ounce, 10 troy ounces, and 1 kilogram. Therefore, the range is more limited than the Lunar series, and the Kookaburra is more regarded as an investment coin.

Kangaroo Coins 2020

Finally, the 2020 Kangaroo coins. These coins are available in gold, silver, and platinum. For the silver coin, the same design is always used, but the design of the gold variant differs from previous years. You can see the design of the 2020 coins in the image above. In addition to all these coins, the Perth Mint will also release a 2020 Koala variant, which will only be available from mid-January.

The 2019 silver kilo coins are now sold out worldwide and are only available through select dealers. At The Silver Mountain, we only have a small quantity of the Lunar variant left, and from next week, we will adjust our inventory to the 2020 coins. You can find our range on our website, and we will also post an article on our blog once the coins are available.
