Historical background

The "Génie" coin was first designed by the famous French engraver Augustin Dupré in 1791, during the First French Republic. The design was later revised and reintroduced in 1848 and 1849, and then re-minted from 1871 to 1898 after the fall of the Second French Empire. The coin is part of the Latin Monetary Union, a 19th-century initiative that sought to standardize monetary standards among several European countries.

Superstition and legend

There is an intriguing legend surrounding this coin. Augustin Dupré, the designer, is said to have escaped the guillotine during the Terror thanks to a "Génie" coin he was carrying. The story goes that the blade of the guillotine did not fall, thus sparing his life. While the authenticity of this story is debatable, it has contributed to the coin's reputation as a good luck charm. Some even claim that Napoleon Bonaparte's defeat at Waterloo was due to the loss of his "Génie" coin, which had previously brought him good luck.

Investment score

This product has a B-label (Common bullion coins and bars). This means that it is a common coin or bar that is easily tradable worldwide. However, a product with this label is more expensive than a product with an A-label, so as an investment in physical gold and silver, this product is not the most cost-effective choice. Examples of coins with a B-label are coins with a lower mintage.
