Which gold coins to buy?

Autor: Rolf van Zanten Date: 21 February 2025 Update: 21 February 2025 Reading time: 4 min

Investors often choose to buy gold coins to protect their wealth and diversify their portfolio. The Silver Mountain sells gold coins from official mints, made of pure gold (99.9%). All prices are determined based on the current gold price, ensuring you get the best possible price.

Factors to consider when buying gold coins

To determine which gold coins are best to buy, you should consider various factors, including price, purity, weight, and the purpose of the investment.

Gold coin price and purity

The price of gold coins is partly determined by their purity. Newly minted coins have a purity of 99.9% pure gold. When purchasing new gold coins, you pay more than just the spot price of gold. This is because it is a physical product that includes production costs, transportation costs, and dealer margins. However, these premiums ensure that you own a globally recognized and tradable coin.

Another option is investing in historical coins, such as the golden ten-guilder coin or a gold ducat. The price of these coins is lower because they are less pure. For example, a golden ten-guilder coin contains 90% pure gold, while a gold ducat has a 98.3% purity. Historical coins are often popular among collectors.

Gold Coins Weights and Sizes

Most gold coins come in a weight of 1 troy ounce. This is a unit that is used worldwide in the trade of gold and silver. Converted, a troy ounce is 31.103 grams.

Depending on the weight, the price varies proportionally. A rule of thumb is that the smaller the coin, the higher the production costs. A 1 troy ounce gold coin has lower production costs than a ¼ troy ounce coin. By choosing a larger coin, the gold price per gram is lower.

However, the overall purchase costs of smaller coins are lower. If you want to invest in gold with a smaller budget, gold coins of ½, ¼ or 1/10 troy ounce can be an ideal solution.

Buy gold coins as an investment or collection

Why you want to buy gold coins is also an important factor. Most coins are sold to investors or collectors. In some cases, it is a combination of both.

Investment gold is an ideal means of protection against inflation and the uncertainty of current fiat currencies because it retains its intrinsic value. Gold has therefore been used as a medium of exchange for centuries and all over the world.

For investors, globally recognized coins such as the Gold Philharmonic, Maple Leaf, American Eagle and Krugerrand are a good choice. Certain series such as the Lunar coins come in different mintages making them rarer and are considered as investment coins and collector coins.

Collector coins are rarer than regular investment coins. Higher premiums are attached to these. Collector coins do come in special packaging with a certificate.

Liquidity of gold coins

Gold coins are highly liquid, especially when they come from recognized mints that meet the strict quality requirements of the LBMA. They are tradable worldwide and retain their value, even in times of instability. Investment coins are generally easier to trade than historical or collector coins. If you want to invest in gold coins to secure your assets, it is wiser to choose, for example, the Maple Leaf over the gold tenner.
